The first ever fit for breeding test was held in the UK on Saturday 20th March 2010
The UKDA (United Kingdom Dobermann Association) held the first ever ZTP (Zuchttauglichkeitspufungsbericht, the German Breed Suitability Test) on Saturday 20th March 2010 judged by Mr Hans Wiblishauser. With 9 Dobermann competing, 7 dogs passed and 2 deferments able to re-take the test from 3 months time.
The test on the day included identification checks, a 48 point conformation test with each point being graded (a copy of which is given to the handler) and a character test which covered temperament around strangers and groups as well as courage, with health tests having to be passed some weeks prior to the test day as well having passed a BH (Begleithundprufung) the German obedience and temperament test..
No Dobermann litters in Germany are registered with their Kennel Club unless both parents have passed the ZTP test, ensuring that only the very best dogs are bred from and that the enthusiasts control the breed and not puppy farmers and irresponsible breeders, as is the case in our own country. Almost three times the amount of Dobermann are being registered by our Kennel Club compared to Germany, a sad fact considering that about a third of this UK number end up in one of our 4 breed rescues (who are always full), rescue centres, council pounds up and down the country or being destroyed every year.
We are not suggesting that the ZTP be adopted here, as we are just starting out and it is a hard test, but we do believe that the way forward is through fit for breeding tests to cover identification, health, conformation and character is needed in this country to reduce the 50,000 dogs a year (of all breeds) being needlessly destroyed and the countless thousands more abandoned and unwanted awaiting rescue in centres and pounds across the country and with reports being written and legislation being continually passed down to councils from Government we need to act now. The Dobermann is in the top 10 list for the most dangerous dogs for killing or seriously harming children in this country and if we are not careful, these top ten breeds will be the next to be legislated against, with other countries continuing to ban breeds and with 4 breeds already banned in this country it is not beyond the realms of possibility that these breeds could follow. These are facts not just opinion. The time to stand together and unite is now.
The Dobermann was bred to protect us, now we must protect the Dobermann.
Help us to help them!

Breed Specific Legislation is rearing its head again

.
As published in the Dog World, January 29th 2010, in another European Country – namely Denmark – they are talking of banning 14 breeds due the amount of casualties resulting from dog attacks.
Here in the UK we already have four banned breeds, and with lists compiled of the top ten most dangerous dogs, one of which is the Dobermann, it is not beyond the realms of possibilities that the Dobermann could be included in legislation. The time to act is now, we all know that once legislative bans are discussed, it is usually already too late; the writing is on the wall.
It would not be the first time that our Government has decided what is going to happen to our breed, we cannot afford to sit back and hope that common sense will prevail, we need to work together now to protect and promote our breed, to have the enthusiasts who actually have the knowledge and the breeds best interests at heart controlling our breed by way of fit for breeding tests, not the puppy farmers and irresponsible breeders that seem to control our breed at the moment.
If you agree that the time is right for us to protect our breed, then join us now. The UKDA is willing to take on this challenge to promote and protect the Dobermann in the UK and will work with breed rescues, enthusiasts, the general public and other organisations to affect real change, but we do need extra support, so if you know of anyone that sees this in the same way then get them to join the UKDA as we need numbers behind us. Membership is free and can be accessed online at www.ukdobermannassociation.com
